Toshiba have long had a reputation for innovation & quality products. At the time of it's release, Toshiba assured us during a trade show that there was a marked difference between their model & that of DGTEC, which at the time was the only other manufacturer with an HD set top box available.
So, it came as something of a surprise, given that information that when we finally did get our hands on one, that yes, it was a markedly different STB, but only on the outside. The software is pretty much identical to the DGTEC 5000i, as is the remote control, though surprisingly, we have seen very little of the problems which have plagued the DGTEC unit appear on this Toshiba & we have now seen quite a number of these in service for some time. Perhaps in similar fashion to the Panasonic, which is also a cousin to the DGTEC, better attention to detail & a higher level of quality control have definitely assisted the model becoming more positively accepted.
I'm still unsure as to why this unit behaves in a different manner to the 5000i, because to all intentsd & purposes, it's just identical. With quite a few installations of these now well behind us, I am much more impressed with this unit, though the Thomson HD & Panasonic HD units are certainly worthy contenders if you're considering any of the current HD models & a newcomer to the scene, the Homecast brand, but we have yet to see one of these.
The Verdict: While it's disappointing to see Toshiba having done little or nothing with the software etc... on this unit, we are happy to see that it has experienced relatively few problems. I guess about the only real downside is the slow speed of scanning, which tends to extend the time it takes to make sure one is working & installed correctly, but this is usually only a one-off job anyway. This is certainly one of those to consider if you're looking for a high definition STB, but bear in mind that there is a new Toshiba now on the market.
